WEEK #9 COPY CAT

There's a famous quote by Designer Yohji Yamamoto:

Start copying what you love. Copy copy copy copy. At the end of the copy you will find yourself.”

― This week's Art Challenge: 'Copy' a style by another artist of your choice. This is something Susan and I remember doing in art school, and while it made us feel a little like imposters, we really learned a lot from the experience! It's a great way to try something new; and that could mean anything—your set-up, your subject, color choices, point of view, angles... the list goes on. Artists copy one another because we're curious. That's just what artists do. Until you find yourself.
How much (or little) you decide to work out this weeks art prompt is up to you. Have fun and explore. Isn't it wonderful we have such great artist sources to keep us inspired? Who will yours be?

Check out artist Virginia Naughton's inspired painting from this challenge!
"I picked artist Gerhard Richter for the #9 challenge. I think his squeegee paintings are a real inspiration in working abstractly. It was a challenge for me, but it was also freeing.  I like abstract and want to work towards more simplification. I kept Picasso's quote in mind: "There is no abstract art. You must always start with something. Afterwards you can remove all traces of reality."

Plein air artist Sarah Tanzer's inspired oil painting:
"This is inspired by a painting that was inspired by one Richard Schmid's paintings.
It is a detail of a painting called "Sugar Maples." I actually started this painting a couple of months ago and worked on it more this past week. Lately I  have been looking at painters who paint landscapes and learning from them. "

Artist Janet Filemyr explores her 'Realistic abstract' watercolor inspired by artist Kees Van Aalst .
